I had a problem where the fan was going almost constantly, and huge amounts of CPU were being taken up.It seemed to be due to broken or corrupted .AVI files . This command fixed the former:
launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.quicklook.plist
and this highlights where the issues are:
top -u -s3
