The Markets at Night
Daily Photo – The Market at NightI arrived in Barcelona very late. Actually, this may be the only time in which Barcelona even exists. There is a fabulous market right in this very location that is apparently open in something called the ‘daytime”. The “daytime” is a mystical time that most people in Barcelona don’t even know exists. I know this for sure because the next morning, at 9 AM on a WEEKDAY, I could not find any place open to buy coffee. People sleep in until approximately 3 PM. They then roll around in bed, thinking about getting up until 4 PM. They then get up, have some chocolate and churros, and then take a quick nap before it gets dark. And then they party. |
Gaudi
Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gracia is one of the most awesome places in the world. My camera was very happy (and me, by extension).
This is one of Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces. That guy is amazing… It was certainly on my list to visit before the trip, and I did not really have enough time to spend there. And, I couldn’t use the tripod, but I don’t want to get into that discussion…just too frustrating.
“The Shaft” runs up the center of the casa. It reminds me of how each floor was a completely different visual experience. Taking photos in here was a challenge… I wanted to do the place justice.

The Myst Staircase
Daily Photo – The Myst Staircase
I wish I could have met Gaudi. The only thing I know about him is his art, but I’m guessing he was an interesting guy.
I also would have like to own one of his houses, but then I’d be in a pickle. He only designed and built a few of these houses, and I think living inside of them would be amazing. But, since it is such a work of art, I’d feel compelled to share it with the world. You can’t live in it AND open it up to the public – so what to do? I’d like to say I’d be noble and open it up to the world, but the wonderfully selfish side of me would want it all to myself. Maybe it’s not that different than owning a Renoir. Not that I own one of those either… but it is an interesting decision to think about.
This is one of the many beautiful staircases in the Casa Batlló, located in central Barcelona on Passeig de Gràcia. It’s also called the “House of Bones”, and it reminds me of the good old days playing Myst…

10 "Handy" Photoshop foul-ups
Two hands, five fingers on each. Sounds simple, right? Yet when there's Photoshop and a (possibly drunk) graphic artist at work, things don't always come out as nature intended.
There's something unlucky about #13, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
Always a trend-setter, Michael McKean models the 'Four-Fingered Hand' epaulettes seen on the Paris runways last year.
Can I get you an oven mitt... or three?
Don't look at that -- look over here at my beautiful corsage.
Domino's: when sort of good is good enough.
Finally, a mousepad designed for seven-fingered bewigged aliens!
This chord makes no sense! Where is this finger supposed to go?
Wow, that is a bizarre binge! She's shoveling it in with both all hands.
Love means overlooking each other's little flaws.
What a great song! Let's fist-bump! Oh... sorry.
Dam Busters dog renamed for movie remake
Stephen Fry, who is writing the screenplay for the remake of the classic Dam Busters movie, has announced that to avoid controversy, the name of the squadron’s dog will be changed from the ‘N-word’ to ‘Cuntface’, it was announced yesterday.
It has long been considered embarrassing that the mascot of RAF 617 squadron was named using racist vernacular. The fact that the original 1955 film retained this name for the dog character has led to it scarcely, if ever, being screened in America, and plans for a long-overdue remake foundered for years on the thorny question of how to include the animal without offending viewers.
‘People are very concerned about maintaining historical integrity,’ explained Fry this morning, ‘But say what you like, you just can’t have a modern movie shown in the US with a dog called the N-word. I decided that ‘Cuntface’ had the right melange of wit and edginess, and so ‘Cuntface’ he became.’
However, Fry is already under pressure from the film’s American financiers to change one or two aspects of the story for the US audience. In a new draft by two Los Angeles based screenwriters, the movie opens with a maverick American low-ranking serviceman inventing a new type of bomb after skimming stones with his disabled son. He struggles to get the idea past his obstinate superior and eventually has to go straight to the top where President Roosevelt interrupts a meeting with Winston Churchill and the Queen to talk to him. Fortunately the American president sees the merit of his plan and once the Queen has stopped stuttering, he gives the green light to proceed.
Tom Hanks then leads a crack unit of Flying Fortresses on the bombing mission from New Orleans with a refuelling stop at a tiny Atlantic Island. Here they dance to Glen Miller and the Beatles and are pursued by grateful local girls who go mad for gifts of gum and stockings before they launch Cruise Missiles at Baghdad and land to liberate Auschwitz from the Russians.
‘It’s a surprisingly loose interpretation of history…’ admitted Fry, ‘but I’m sure we can keep the original spirit of the film intact. The scene with Tom Hanks surfing his way across the flooded Ruhr shooting Nazi leaders is close enough…’

Favourite Android Apps - Part 1 - utilities / tools
Let's start with Smart Shortcuts. It allows you to organise apps into groups of your own preference and display on your home screens - much neater than having lots of random widgets.
Astro is predominantly a file manager, but also allows you to see how much free space you have, as well as providing a Process Manager and the ability to back up your apps.
SDrescan seems to solve the issue of photos disappearing from your SD card (it does a quick "sort" and then everything you thought you'd lost is back)
IP Manage allows different profiles to be set up for use at home, work or anywhere else really. Where I have a static IP with fixed DNS at home, a mere change of profile means I have my work settings accessible too.
There doesn't seem to be a standard text editor within my phone, so Text Edit does the job.
Astrid Tasks syncs smoothly with Google Tasks and is perfect for making brief reminders.
1Password works with its Mac equivalent to provide a secure locker of website sign ons.
3G Watchdog keeps track of 3G data usage to help you keep within your carrier's data limits.
Docs = Google Docs
Dropbox - does anyone need telling what this does?!
ConnectBot - Secure Shell login to servers, etc
Lookout - virus scanning, security and backup
SMS Backup - self explanatory
Translate - Google Translate
RingGo - payments by mobile
