The Reply Given in Arkell v. Pressdram

This case is well known among lawyers and journalists, especially the phrase 'I refer you to the reply given in Arkell and Pressdram'.

But it really deserves to be better known, and so I set it out below.

Solicitors' letter to Private Eye:

We act for Mr Arkell who is Retail Credit Manager of Granada TV Rental Ltd.

His attention has been drawn to an article appearing in the issue of Private Eye dated 9th April 1971 on page 4. The statements made about Mr Arkell are entirely untrue and clearly highly defamatory.

We are therefore instructed to require from you immediately your proposals for dealing with the matter. Mr Arkell's first concern is that there should be a full retraction at the earliest possible date in Private Eye and he will also want his costs paid. His attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of your reply.

Private Eye's reply:

We acknowledge your letter of 29th April referring to Mr J. Arkell.

We note that Mr Arkell's attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of our reply and would therefore be grateful if you would inform us what his attitude to damages would be, were he to learn that the nature of our reply is as follows: fuck off.

Copy Error Code 0

unexpected error code 0

“The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code 0).”

You’re likely to see this error when you are attempting to copy files to an external hard drive that is formatted as FAT. FAT32 is a Windows file system that can be read and written to by Mac OS X. The problem with FAT32 format is that they can not hold file sizes larger than 4GB, so if you are trying to copy a file that is larger than 4GB to a FAT32 formatted drive you will immediately be presented with the ‘error code 0′ message.

The simplest solution is to use drives formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or HFS+ file systems, however a Windows PC will not be able to access either of these file systems without additional software. There is no reliable way to force FAT32 to accept file sizes larger than 4GB, and FAT16 is an even older file system with worse limitations of 2GB file sizes. If you want a drive to be accessible by both Mac OS X and Windows, you can format the drive as NTFS, and use an NTFS mounter for Mac OS X to try and write to the drive, however NTFS is not officially supported by Apple and you may run into some problems when writing data to the destination device.

A possible fix for Spotlight re-indexing problems

This tip might be handy if Spotlight seems to take forever to re-index. I re-indexed Spotlight, and it started showing the spinning wheel. I was unable to pinpoint an obvious reason for this.

Some weeks later I decided to get rid of most of the DYLD errors from the Console log. As a step in doing I booted the machine into safe mode, and cleaned all the system caches. After having done that Spotlight started working as it should again, reading the indices when performing searches.

Restore items from the Trash to their previous location

You can restore the original location of a file that has been sent to the Trash very easily. Select an item in the Trash and hit the Command+Delete keys to send that item to it’s location prior to the Trash. If you’re not a fan of keystrokes, try Right-Clicking on the file within the Trash and select ‘Put Back’ from the contextual menu (see screenshot).

restore item from trash
You can select many files, or all the files in the Trash if you want, it will put them all back in their original location on your Mac.
